The Theory Of Learning

Learning new skills can be very challenging, but at the same time most rewarding.  With a skill as important as learning to swim, we constantly innovate to keep our students engaged so that they achieve the desired results. These points will provide some insight into this area. 

  • Learning is a process that takes place over time. That’s why learning to swim should become a part of our children’s ongoing education. Swimming is a skill which requires focused learning and practicing. 
  • Learning is enhanced by the environment it takes place within. The pool environment needs to be comfortable, nurturing and encouraging. Hence, our water and air temperature are always nice and warm for the children. This allows our children to learn all year round, no matter what the weather is like outside. 
  • People learn in different ways; some process information by listening, some by watching and some need a more practical approach. We have found that using a combination of approaches meets everyone’s needs. 
  • Learning is best achieved by breaking a skill down into bite sized pieces. At State Swim, we have a progressive system where the next skill is only taught after the foundation skill has been grasped. 
  • Progression achievements are rewarded with certificates to mark children’s accomplishments and they officially pronounce their readiness for learning the next skill. We ring the bell to announce a swimmer’s progression to the next level, and encourage others to do the same. 
  • Children learn from each other which is why we have small class sizes. It is better for children to observe others attempting the same skills rather than being in a class by themselves, hence group lessons are more beneficial.
