Max 4 pupils per class / Duration 30 minutes
The Glides class is the first of the 8 stages in the 400 Gold Program. For some kids this is the first time they have had swimming lessons, and for those swimmers who have come from our Swim and Play Program this class signifies swimming in the “big kids class” for the first time. Regardless of a swimmer's past experience this class is fundamental in establishing the right foundations for all our classes to come.
The Glides class introduces children to basic water skills and enables them to feel comfortable in the water and relaxed in the swimming lesson environment. A child’s happiness in this class is crucial for them to attempt the skills required of them.
Swimmers will be required to put their face and head under water in these lessons in preparation for teaching them a glide. Some swimmers in the Glides class may not have put their face in the water before so this can be very confronting for these young swimmers. Time, trust and reassurance are key to encouraging Glides swimmers to attempt the skills. Small class size (max of 4 pupils) also allows the instructor to attend to each swimmer and their individual needs.
The most important swimming skill kids must learn is breath control, and these lessons are where this is introduced. From the moment they put their face in the water they are taught about blowing bubbles and why it is important. In addition to putting their face in the water and learning the correct breathing technique they will be introduced to backstroke kicking.
Once the child is performing a streamline glide with a small kick on the kickboard on both their front and their back they are then promoted to the Torpedoes class.
